My first ever ensemble-driven piece!

👜Reusable bag 👜reusable bag 👜reusable bag?! Don’t you hate it when you forget your reusable bag in the car?! 😫 Or when you go get boba with friends and realize you’ve forgotten your multi-colored metal straw set at home????! 😭

It was so much fun putting together my first ever ensemble-driven piece last month! I wrote this super short play (swipe to read) as part of my playwriting professor’s challenge (@bthorstenson !!!) like five years ago and then it transformed into this piece about the environment and our human impact on the world. 💫 Truthfully, this piece could be about any given topic (ie the 2020 election, affordable housing, fair wage, etc) and it could really be put on by ANYBODY!

🎭Ty to @more.mas.marami for choosing me and my idea for this! We really brought together a small, but tight group of artists from all experience-levels and it goes to show that theatre can be created ANYWHERE and by ANYONE. Can’t wait for the next project! 🤪⚡️ Lmk if you want to get involved as an artist or supporter! 🙏🏽

🌎But really, what are you doing to help the fight against climate change? 🚌 Carpooling? 🥬 Eating less meat? 👜 Reusable bags? Whatever it is, I hope it’s *something* because we can all do a little.

Mental Health Check-In May 2019

🌸May is Mental Health Awareness Month! 🌺 Did you know that everyone has mental health, just like physical health? 🌼Our mind and emotions exist just like our bodies. 🌷We have to pay attention to mental health in the same way we pay attention to physical health. When you run a long marathon, you have to rest. 🗣When you have a hard conversation with your partner, you have to rest. When you are navigating body image and politics and economic justice and social expectations, you have to rest. When you are juggling work/friends/family/rent/side projects/concerts/etc, you have to rest.

I’ve been doing my best to give myself grace and forgiveness when I spend weekend mornings in bed or sleep in extra before work. Been working on paying attention to what works for me (sleeping early, essential oils, yoga, following empowering artists on Instagram). 🏅Been setting goals, meeting some of them, and continuing to work on others. 🌱 I hope you know that asking for help or taking a break from things or even just talking about your depressing morning with a friend is not weak or bad. What about you? How do you take care of yourself?

This Winter Season (18/19)

This last winter season, my team at @aaciamplify and I created a winter gingerbread land AND executed an arts conference for youth in #ESSJ, I went to 🍬 Candytopia with my cousins, I made 🍚 rice and mac n cheese for Thanksgiving, my iPhone screen cracked📱, I cried, I cried, I cried, my second play in the #realworld was produced at @bindlestiff_sf, my uncle never quit in his fight against leukemia, I volunteered with 🇵🇭 @lead_filipino as the #FlyPinays2019 Program Director, I learned more about civic engagement as a student with @apali_org. I met an amazing group of theatre artists @more.mas.marami 🎭 with plans to produce theatre in San Jose. I started using 🏋🏽‍♀️ weights in my exercise?! I went to yoga 🧘🏽‍♀️ for the first time and it felt like the sweatiest and most PRESENT moment in my life???? I started approaching my emotions and my relationship in a way I’ve never done before. I went to three 🦈 @sanjosesharks games and they WON. I watched Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse twice 🕷I started watching We Bare Bears 🐻🐼 I’ve experienced new things; the good, the bad, and the baffling. … I’m feeling like a lot of things are falling into place, while a few other things are falling out. And I indulged in ice cream, beer, boba, and more 😅

For real, this winter season has probably been the most challenging in my life and I guess that’s what growing up is, amirite. As challenging as it was… it was probably the most growth I’ve had since graduating college. I contemplated many of my relationships, touched base with others, connected with new, breath-of-fresh-air, REAL AUTHENTIC, spirited souls. Life’s been this teeter-totter, giving me new signs and changing my mind every week. We don’t gotta have it figured it out right now. We don’t gotta compare. We don’t gotta do anything but be our best. And I promise, we are all doing our best. 💟

Many thanks and shout outs to my people for holding it down and holding each other. Let’s chat if you wanna, #letsbloom2019 for sure.

Curveball 2018

Roll with the punches, peeps! 👊🏽 This year, I’ve already seen a live spoken word performance, got tickets to my first music festival, ate dumplings, CRIED, (re)started working on my WIP play, BEGAN A GYM ROUTINE wtf, got headaches 3 days in a row, finished reading my first YA novel in years, forgot to pay my Target REDcard on time, got my first oil change for my own car, recorded my first spoken word video, and hung out with all my cool peeples 😌 What happens when you just let life happen 🌀

Love Equals: Empowerment through Education

To be honest, I almost don’t really know how I stumbled into theatre. Someone told me during the first week of 9th grade that I would be good at it, so I signed up for ITS (drama club) – and then BOOM. My life was changed. I learned to express myself, stage manage, design lights, coil wires, dance in an ensemble, talk on stage, and then finally WRITE. As a theatre arts major in college, all of these skills were reinforced and I realized that these skills would take me where I want to go. Theatre education has done so much for me and I know it can do so much for the world.

EMPOWERMENT THROUGH EDUCATION is our theme for Week One of #LoveEquals and I want to highlight the amazing work of ✨ Teatro Catalina ✨, an org based in Nicaragua. Rooted in the small village of Villa Catalina, Teatro Catalina believes that “theatre creates space for dreams and dreams creates hope for the future”.

I wholeheartedly believe that every child NEEDS some form of arts education and Teatro Catalina is that resource for the kids in Villa Catalina. They use theatre to build confidence, creative thinking, and problem- solving skills in the youth, skills they wouldn’t be exposed to without Teatro Catalina. The activities and large-scale productions also unleash SO MUCH creativity, self expression, and FUN! All of the theatrical games and shows teach the kids that they can dream bigger than their village and go on to become successful college graduates, professionals, and artists.

RIGHT NOW, Teatro Catalina is fundraising #10Kfor10K while they also train for a 10K race! The $10,000 will go towards becoming their own non-profit organization – creating more ways for them to spread theatre to the young people. Today, I am donating to Teatro Catalina because I know the power of theatre and I also know the power of people. It takes so much time, energy, and THOUGHT to run arts programming and I know Katie Fitzgerald and the rest of the team are the perfect people to get it all done. 💓

P.S. I’ll be sharing a little bit more from Teatro Catalina, so stay tuned! 🤗
